Did you know that it's National Check your Pool Gate Day in Australia today, December 1st? Why would you know that unless you live in Australia? And even then, there's a good chance you don't know.
In recognition of this day, I would like to share a safety checklist with you since faulty or inadequate pool gates and fences remain a leading cause of drownings around the world in kids under the age of five. Statistically, gates are the weakest link, so make sure you check your gate for the following:
-
Gate should open outwards, away from the pool
-
Latch release knob at least 1500 mm above ground level (or 4' 9" for the non metric people out there. Also this height may vary depending on the law in your location)
-
Gate must be self-closing and self-latching
-
Gate hinges should be rust free and bind free
-
Gate carries reliable, tension-adjustable hinges
-
Latch cannot be key locked in the "open" position
-
Latch cannot be disengaged using implements
-
Gate latch cannot be disengaged by jolting or shaking
-
Gate will shut securely from any angle or force
-
Gate complies with all pool standards and specifications
Hope you have a wonderful weekend and don't forget to check your pool gate.
Love the water but fence it in,
Tessa
