Planning a Pool Party? Do This One Thing to Keep Your Kids Safe

A parent of one of my students told me about a 2-year-old who drowned at a pool party a few years back which made me think that it's time to remind you of how to keep your kids safe at pool parties.

You may think that because there are so many sets of eyes at a pool party that someone is probably watching your child.

But the people present aren’t paying close attention. Drowning is silent, so it will go unnoticed if no one is actively watching. It's not like in the movies with flailing arms and yelling. No drowning victim has the time, energy or air to call for help.

The best way to make sure that someone is actively watching your child is to designate a water watcher, or you might want to consider hiring a lifeguard.

ABC News did a whole report on the subject. A water watcher is somebody who stands next to the pool, free from distractions and is constantly scanning the water for any signs of distress.
