I want to share a tip with you that is so obvious, but most of you have probably never even thought of it before. The level of the water in your pool can be a crucial factor in saving the life of a child.
If you have a swimming pool and young children, make sure to keep the water level as high as possible. If the water is at deck level, it's effortless for a baby to pull himself up as you can see by the photo below. This baby has learned how to turn back to the wall. A skill that is learned
and not automatic. On the other hand, if the water level is low, it's very challenging for a young child to reach up for the edge of the pool and next to impossible to climb out as illustrated below. The toddler in the photo looks like she's going to make it, but then can't quite hang in there and BAM! She's back in the
pool. As I mentioned above, turning back to the wall is a skill that needs to be taught to your child. If your kiddo can't perform this maneuver, then the water level in your pool isn't going to make a difference.
KEEP YOUR KIDDO SAFE AROUND WATER
|
- Enroll your child in swim lessons
- Fence in your pool and other water features
- Install pool alarms and door sensors
- Cover your pool with a pool net. (A traditional pool cover collects water and therefore poses a
danger as it only takes 2 inches of water to cover the mouth and nose.)
- Provide close and constant attention to children near water
