Hello friend,
One of the proudest moments for any parent is watching their child swim on their own for the very first time. But that leap from guided swim lessons to independent swimming can feel a little daunting, for both you and your child.
Making the Jump: From Lessons to Independent Swims
It’s normal for
kids (and parents) to feel a mix of excitement and nerves as swim lessons wrap up. The good news? With a few simple strategies, you can help your child move from the safety of lessons to confident, independent swimming.
- Keep supervision front and center: Even as your child grows more independent in the water, never leave them unsupervised. Stay within arm’s reach, especially in new or crowded settings.
- Practice in familiar water
first: Let your child build confidence in the same pool where they learned their skills before trying new environments like lakes or beaches.
- Set clear, simple rules: Go over basic safety guidelines together; no running, always ask before getting in, and what to do if they feel tired or scared.
- Celebrate small steps: Every time your child swims a little farther, floats a little longer, or remembers a safety rule, cheer them on.
Confidence grows with encouragement.
- Stay patient: Every child is different. Some will progress faster than others. Let them set the pace and offer support as needed.
