Hello friend,
As we welcome June and the start of a new swim season, I want to talk about something that’s often overlooked: common swimming injuries in children and, most importantly, how to prevent them.
Understanding the Most Common Swimming Injuries
- Slips and Falls:
Wet pool decks are slippery! Most poolside injuries happen when kids run or move too quickly. Remind your child to walk, not run, and always use handrails when getting in and out of the pool.
- Swimmer’s Shoulder: Repetitive strokes can sometimes lead to sore shoulders, especially in older children who swim frequently. Encourage gentle warm-ups, proper technique, and regular breaks.
- Ear Infections: Water trapped in the ear can cause discomfort or
infection. To prevent swimmer's ear, I recommend this home remedy.
- Sunburn: Even on cloudy days, sunburn is a risk around water. Use water-resistant sunscreen and reapply often, especially after swimming.
Simple Ways to Prevent Swimming
Injuries
- Set clear pool rules: No running, no diving in shallow water, and always swim with an adult present.
- Practice safe entries and exits: Show your child how to use ladders or steps and avoid jumping in where it’s too shallow.
- Keep swim sessions short with plenty of breaks to avoid fatigue and overuse injuries.
- Refresh their swimming skills each season. Confident swimmers are
safer swimmers!
Building Confidence, Preventing Injuries
Swimming is one of the best gifts you can give your child, but safety always comes first. By teaching your kids these simple habits, you help them enjoy the water with confidence and avoid unnecessary injuries.
Wishing you a fun, safe, and splash-filled June!
❤️ Tessa
