Hello friend,
As we near the end of May and Drowning Prevention Month, I want to talk about something every parent, caregiver, and swimmer should feel confident about: recognizing and responding to different water emergencies.
It’s not always obvious when someone is in trouble in the water. Emergencies can look very different
depending on the situation and knowing what to do can truly save a life.
How to Recognize a Water Emergency
- Silent Struggle: Drowning is often quiet. Watch for someone who is vertical in the water, unable to call for help, or making climbing motions with their arms.
- Sudden Disappearance: If a child is missing, always check the water first. Seconds count.
- Unusual Behavior: Look out for
anyone who seems confused, is gasping, or is unable to keep their head above water.
How to Respond Quickly and Safely
- Call for Help: Shout for help and have someone call emergency services immediately.
- Reach or Throw, Don’t Go: If it’s safe, use a reaching pole, life ring, or pool noodle to help the person without entering the water yourself.
- Supervise Closely: Stay alert and
keep your eyes on swimmers at all times; no distractions, even for a moment.
- Learn CPR: Knowing basic CPR can make all the difference while waiting for emergency responders.
Building Confidence for Every Situation
Understanding what different emergencies look like and how to respond, gives you peace of mind and helps everyone enjoy the water safely. If you want more step-by-step guidance, my Online Swim Academy is designed to help you help your child build real water confidence, one skill at a time.
