Hello friend,
Summer officially starts in about week, and if you’ve ever watched a child light up during swim time, you know that play is at the heart of learning. Today, I want to share why play is not just fun, but essential when it comes to helping your child learn to swim.
Why Play Matters in Swim
Lessons
Children learn best when they’re having a good time. Playful games in the water help kids relax, build confidence, and develop skills without even realizing they’re learning. When children are engaged through play, fears melt away and progress happens naturally.
Some Popular Swim Games to Motivate Your Child
- Treasure Hunt: Drop sinkable toys or rings in shallow water and let your child “dive” for treasure.
This simple game encourages face-in-the-water skills and breath control.
- Red Light, Green Light: Use this classic game in the pool to practice kicking and floating. Call out “green light” to go and “red light” to stop, helping your child learn to control their movements.
- Simon Says: Stand where all the kids can see you and say actions like: "Simon says splash your hands!" or “Simon says blow bubbles!”
Kids should only do the action if you say
“Simon says” first.
If you just say “Jump!” (without “Simon says”) and someone does it, they’re out or just giggle and try again for younger kids.
Making Progress - One Laugh at a Time
Remember, every child moves at their own pace. Celebrate small victories and keep the mood light. The more positive experiences your child has in the water, the more motivated they’ll be to try new skills and keep learning.
